The Battle of the Boyne bank holiday — Orangemen’s Day, or simply “the Twelfth” — falls on Monday 12 July 2027. It is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland only. After two years in which the date moved to a substitute Monday, 2027 puts the holiday back on 12 July itself, and on a Monday, which gives a natural three-day weekend.

These are the dates GOV.UK lists for Northern Ireland. In 2025 and 2026, 12 July fell at a weekend, so the day off moved to Monday 14 July 2025 and Monday 13 July 2026 respectively. In 2027 there is no substitution: the calendar date, the bank holiday and the main parades all line up on Monday 12 July. How the holiday is set

Unlike St Patrick’s Day, 12 July does not appear in the Northern Ireland section of Schedule 1 to the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971. That schedule lists 17 March, Easter Monday, the last Mondays in May and August, and the Christmas dates. The Twelfth is added separately each year by Royal Proclamation, which is why its substitute day is fixed year by year rather than by a line in the statute. In practice the pattern has been consistent: when 12 July lands on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday becomes the bank holiday. What the day commemorates

The Battle of the Boyne was fought near Drogheda on 1 July 1690 under the Julian calendar then in use, between the forces of William of Orange and those of the deposed King James II. William’s victory became a landmark of the Williamite war in Ireland. After Britain adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752, the anniversary shifted in the calendar, and the commemoration settled on 12 July.

Today the Twelfth is marked chiefly by the Orange Order, with parades and marching bands in towns and villages across Northern Ireland; parade locations rotate from year to year, and Belfast hosts one of the largest. On the evening before, the Eleventh Night, bonfires are lit in many loyalist neighbourhoods. When 12 July falls on a Sunday, the parades traditionally move to the Monday. That happened in 2026. In 2027 the Eleventh Night is on Sunday 11 July and the parades on Monday 12 July, the bank holiday itself.

The July fortnight

For many workplaces in Northern Ireland the Twelfth is not a single day off but the centre of a wider summer shutdown. A 2008 Irish Times report described 12 July as “traditionally the one day in July when retailers, businesses and firms shut up shop in Northern Ireland”, and the fortnight around it as the time of year when “many firms, businesses and Government departments in the North take their annual holidays”. The same report noted that business groups wanted more firms to stay open. The picture is still mixed: when the Irish News surveyed 50 pubs, restaurants and cafés in Belfast city centre on 12 July 2025, 31 of them were closed. Expect the same pattern in 2027 — closures on the day itself, and slower responses from Northern Ireland offices and suppliers across the surrounding fortnight.

If you manage staff or suppliers in Northern Ireland from elsewhere in the UK, the practical advice is simple: confirm shutdown dates in writing by early summer, bring forward deliveries due in mid-July, and do not assume a Belfast office keeps the same calendar as London or Glasgow.

Planning leave around the Twelfth in 2027

Because the holiday falls on a Monday, 2027 is a straightforward year:

• Long weekend, no leave: Saturday 10 July to Monday 12 July — three days off with no annual leave used.
• Nine days for four days’ leave: book Tuesday 13 July to Friday 16 July and you are off from Saturday 10 July to Sunday 18 July.
• The full fortnight for nine days’ leave: book Tuesday 13 July to Friday 23 July for 16 consecutive days off, Saturday 10 July to Sunday 25 July. If your employer shuts for the fortnight, check whether those 9 days come out of your own allowance — they usually do.

The Twelfth sits 42 days after the Spring bank holiday (31 May 2027) and 49 days before the Summer bank holiday (30 August 2027), so it neatly breaks up the longest part of the summer. What is open and closed on 12 July 2027

• Shops and hospitality: opening hours vary. Many city-centre bars, restaurants and cafés close for the day, while some larger retailers and attractions open, often on shorter hours. Check before you go — our shops on bank holidays guide explains the general rules.
• Public transport: Translink runs holiday timetables, and roads close along parade routes. Tourism Northern Ireland advises arriving early for a good spot on a parade route and checking timetables in advance.
• Banks and payments: branches in Northern Ireland normally close. Do you get the day off?

Not automatically. As with every UK bank holiday, there is no statutory right to have 12 July off or to be paid extra for working it. Full-time workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks’ paid annual leave, and an employer can choose to count bank holidays as part of that. What you actually get depends on your contract — read bank holiday entitlement, working on a bank holiday and bank holiday pay.
