UK long weekends 2026 — turn 9 days off into 24
Five long weekends, six annual leave bridges, and one master plan to maximise your holiday entitlement around the 2026 UK bank holidays.
The five guaranteed long weekends in 2026
England and Wales pack five long weekends into 2026, with Easter giving a four-day stretch and the Christmas window stretching through the substitute Boxing Day on Monday 28 December. Scotland gets a sixth bonus weekend around 2 January, and Northern Ireland a seventh thanks to St Patrick’s Day on Tuesday 17 March (which becomes a four-day with one day’s leave on Monday 16 March).

How to turn 9 days of leave into 24 consecutive days
The 2026 calendar is unusually generous: by combining the Christmas–New-Year window with strategic annual leave, you can secure 24 consecutive days off while burning only 9 days from your statutory entitlement.
The Christmas-to-Twelfth-Night plan (most powerful)
Take leave from Mon 21 Dec to Wed 30 Dec 2026 (8 working days). Combined with Christmas Day (Fri 25), Boxing Day substitute (Mon 28), and the New Year’s Day bank holiday on Fri 1 January 2027, you cover:
- Sat 19 Dec → Tue 5 Jan 2027 = 18 consecutive days off for 8 days of leave
Easter-to-May-Day double bridge
Take Mon 30 Mar to Wed 1 Apr (3 days), then Tue 7 to Fri 1 May (covers May Day weekend with 4 days). With Good Friday, Easter Monday and Early May Bank Holiday, you stretch from Fri 27 Mar through Mon 4 May = over 5 weeks of mostly-time-off rolling break if you bridge across.

Long weekend planning — common questions
Are long weekends guaranteed for everyone?
No. Bank holiday entitlement is contractual — your employer can require you to work even on a bank holiday. Read your employment contract or staff handbook. UK statute only guarantees 5.6 weeks (28 days) of total paid leave, not specifically the bank holidays.
When should I book my 2026 holiday leave?
For the Christmas-New Year window in particular, book early — many employers receive overlapping requests and operate first-come first-served. Submitting before October 2026 is recommended for year-end leave.
Can my employer refuse a leave request?
Yes. Employers must give you a reasonable notice but can refuse a request, particularly during peak business periods. Statute requires you to be allowed to take your full entitlement during the leave year — but not on the specific dates you choose.
Do part-time workers get pro-rata bank holidays?
Yes. If your contract gives you bank holidays as part of your entitlement, part-time workers get a pro-rated share based on their working hours. See our Pay & Rights guide for the calculation.
