Tesco Bank Holiday Opening Times

Tesco does not have one bank holiday timetable. It has four, because the format of the store you are standing outside decides which rules apply to it.

Why the format matters more than the day

Trading law in England and Wales draws its line at 280 square metres of relevant floor area. Above it, a store is a “large shop”: six hours maximum on a Sunday, closed on Easter Sunday, closed on Christmas Day. Below it, none of that applies.

Tesco Extra and the standard superstores sit well above the line. Tesco Express sits well below it. That single fact explains nearly every difference you will notice between two Tesco branches on the same bank holiday.

The days Tesco’s big stores are closed

Two dates are fixed by statute rather than by Tesco: Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. In 2026 that means Friday 25 December and Sunday 5 April. In 2027 it means Saturday 25 December and Sunday 28 March. Everything else — New Year’s Day, Good Friday, the May bank holidays, the summer bank holiday, Boxing Day — is a normal trading day in law, and Tesco chooses its hours.

Boxing Day is the one to watch. Tesco has opened its large stores on Boxing Day with shortened hours in recent years while several rivals closed completely, but that is a decision announced each December rather than a standing policy.

Petrol stations and the pharmacy counter

Tesco petrol filling stations usually keep longer hours than the store they sit beside, and the forecourt shop is small enough to be exempt from the trading rules. If you only need milk, bread or fuel, the forecourt is the better bet on a bank holiday.

In-store pharmacies are the opposite case. They tend to close earlier than the shop floor, or not open at all on a bank holiday, and they are not part of the local NHS pharmacy rota by default. Online deliveries and Click+Collect

Grocery delivery slots are usually reduced on bank holidays rather than cancelled, and the days either side are the busiest of the week. Book early: the pattern most shoppers hit is not a closed service but a fully booked one. Click+Collect points sit inside the store, so they follow the store’s bank holiday hours, not the website’s.

How to confirm your branch

1. Search your branch on Tesco’s store locator and open the opening hours panel — bank holiday times are added there, usually a week or two ahead.
2. Check the notice on the door in the days before.
3. Ignore the assumption that all Tesco stores in a town share hours. Two branches a mile apart routinely differ.
4. Phone the store if the trip is not optional.
