A Sainsbury’s supermarket and a Sainsbury’s Local are two different propositions on a bank holiday. One reduces its hours and shuts on two days of the year; the other usually carries on as though nothing has happened.
Supermarket, Local, and the 280 square metre line
The split runs along the same line as the rest of the sector. A Sainsbury’s supermarket is a large shop in the eyes of the Sunday Trading Act 1994; a Sainsbury’s Local is not. Large shops get six hours on a Sunday, no trading at all on Easter Sunday, and a statutory closure on Christmas Day. Small shops get none of those restrictions.

Northern Ireland runs its own restrictions on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. Scotland has none of them — a Scottish Sainsbury’s that closes on 25 December is following company policy, and it works to the Scottish bank holiday calendar rather than the English one.
The concessions inside the store close first
This is the part most people get caught by. The shop floor might be open until 8pm, but the services embedded in it frequently are not.
- Argos collection points and in-store Argos: generally shorter hours than the supermarket, and sometimes closed on the bank holiday itself.
- Cafés: often close mid-afternoon or stay shut on a bank holiday.
- In-store pharmacy: commonly closed. It is not automatically part of the local NHS bank holiday rota — see our NHS and pharmacy guide.
- Click & Collect lockers and desks: follow the store’s hours, not the website’s.
- Customer service and returns desks: may open later and close earlier than the tills.
Deliveries and slots
Groceries Online usually runs a reduced slot pattern on a bank holiday rather than stopping. The practical problem is demand, not availability: the Friday and Saturday before a long weekend and the day after the bank holiday are among the busiest delivery days of the month, and slots go early. Book several days out if the delivery matters.
The dates that actually change in 2026 and 2027
Most bank holidays are Mondays, and a Monday closure is not the issue — the reduced hours are. The dates worth putting in a diary are the ones where a store is shut altogether or the day moves:
- Easter Sunday: 5 April 2026, 28 March 2027 — supermarkets closed in England and Wales.
- Christmas Day: Friday 25 December 2026, Saturday 25 December 2027 — supermarkets closed.
- Boxing Day 2026 falls on a Saturday, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December, while shop closures still hinge on 26 December itself.
- In 2027 both Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall at the weekend, giving substitute bank holidays on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December.
