Dundee Trades Holiday: 2026 and 2027 Dates

Dundee takes its trades holiday later than any other Scottish city — the fourth Monday in July, at the tail end of the industrial holiday season. The date is a direct inheritance from the jute mills.

Dundee’s local holidays in 2026

Dundee City Council publishes eight local public holidays, and the council states that they follow a formula and fall at the same point each year.

Applying the council’s own formula to 2027 gives: spring holiday 5 April, May holiday 3 May, Victoria Day 31 May, trades holiday 26 July, autumn holiday 4 October. The council publishes confirmed dates a year at a time, so treat 2027 as the expected pattern rather than a confirmed list — the council’s committee services team confirms dates on request.

Why the last week of July

Dundee’s holiday was built around jute. At its height the city processed a large share of the world’s jute, and the mills employed a workforce dominated by women — the city’s distinctive industrial structure. A mill could not run at partial strength, so the whole industry closed together, and the trade’s customers and shipping schedules put that closure at the end of July.

The result was the Dundee Fortnight: the last week of July and the first week of August, when the jute and textile works shut and the city visibly emptied. Bus and railway stations filled with families heading for Broughty Ferry, the Angus coast and Fife.

The mills are gone and the Fortnight is no longer a shutdown. Fewer local businesses close, and the summer emptiness owes as much to two universities being out of session as to any tradition. What survives is the council holiday itself, the habit of booking summer leave in that window, and adjusted timetables for some local services.

What is affected on the day

• Council offices, registrars and local authority services close.
• Waste and recycling collections shift — the council publishes revised dates in advance.
• Some libraries and community facilities close or run reduced hours.
• Schools are already on summer holiday at this point in July.
• Banks, supermarkets, trains and buses run normally: this is a local holiday, not a bank holiday.
