Edinburgh Trades Holiday and Local Public Holidays

Edinburgh runs the most crowded local holiday calendar of Scotland’s four cities — eleven days in 2026, including two the rest of the UK has never heard of. The trades holidays begin earlier here than anywhere else.

Both years are published by the council, so these are confirmed dates rather than projections. Note that Edinburgh observes Easter Monday as a local holiday even though it is not a bank holiday in Scotland — one of the clearest examples of the two calendars diverging.

Victoria Day, and why Edinburgh has one

Victoria Day marks Queen Victoria’s birthday, 24 May, and survives as a public holiday in a handful of Scottish council areas. Edinburgh takes the Monday nearest to it — 18 May in 2026, 24 May in 2027. Dundee and Inverclyde keep their own versions on different dates, which is why the day appears in some Scottish holiday lists and not others.

It has no counterpart anywhere else in the UK. For visitors the practical effect is a Monday in late May when Edinburgh council services close but the shops, banks and trains run as normal.

The trades fortnight in an Edinburgh that was never a mill town

Edinburgh’s holiday is listed as the day the trades holidays commence rather than as a single day off — the wording is a survival from the era when the building trades, printing houses and engineering firms of Leith and the city closed together for a fortnight from the first Saturday in July.

Edinburgh’s timing was set by its own trades rather than by heavy industry, which is why it falls two to three weeks before Glasgow’s and Dundee’s. The staggering was practical: the Clyde coast resorts, and later the railways, could not absorb every Scottish city in the same fortnight.

Today the fortnight has little visible effect on the city centre, and the Edinburgh summer is defined by the festivals in August rather than by a July shutdown. The date remains in the council’s list, and it still shapes construction and public-sector leave patterns.

What actually closes

• Council offices, registrars and customer service points on the listed holidays.
• Schools — local holidays are built into Edinburgh’s term dates.
• Waste and recycling collections shift; the council publishes revised days.
• Banks, supermarkets and public transport are unaffected on the local-only dates such as Victoria Day, the spring holiday and the September holiday.

The national picture is different again: Scotland’s own bank holidays include the St Andrew’s Day holiday on 30 November and the summer bank holiday in early August, neither of which is on Edinburgh’s local list.
